Plitvice Lakes National Park spans 296 square kilometres of karst terrain where sixteen lakes descend 133 metres through a series of travertine barriers formed over millennia. The upper lakes—Prošćansko, Ciginovac, Okrugljak, and Batinovac among them—sit in dolomite valleys, their water a milky turquoise.
The lower lakes cut through limestone canyons, their colour shifting to steel-grey and emerald depending on mineral content and light. The park was inscribed on UNESCO's World Heritage list in 1979, one of the first natural sites in Europe to receive the designation.
The cascades exist because of a slow chemical process: calcium carbonate precipitates from the water, binding moss and algae into porous rock that builds upward at roughly one centimetre per year. The barriers grow, shift, and occasionally collapse, redirecting watercourses and creating new pools. Veliki Slap, the park's tallest waterfall, drops seventy-eight metres into the Korana River gorge. The site was closed to visitors during the Croatian War of Independence—landmines were cleared from the forest paths until 1998—but today more than a million people walk the eighteen kilometres of wooden boardwalks annually.
Private tours departing from Zagreb typically include Rastoke, a village where the Slunjčica River splits into dozens of channels and tumbles over a series of low waterfalls before joining the Korana. Seventeenth-century mills line the banks, some still grinding grain using wooden wheels. The two-hour drive crosses the Dinaric Alps, passing fields that shift from lowland agriculture to highland pasture. The boardwalks were engineered to float on the water, minimising impact on the fragile travertine. Sections are replaced every decade as wood weathers and algae growth makes surfaces slippery. Brown bears and wolves inhabit the forested perimeter, though sightings on the tourist routes are rare. One hundred and twenty-six bird species nest within the park boundaries, including the three-toed woodpecker and the golden eagle. The water temperature remains between four and seventeen degrees Celsius year-round, fed by underground springs that filter through the karst.
